Emperor Serenity - itinerary

Inquiry

Emperor doesn’t follow a set itinerary as it’s all about the giving you the best diving possible for your tine of year but they will generally will aim to follow one of the itineraries below as closely as possible. As you may know the Maldives has 2 very distinct currents running at different times of the year and this effects which side of the Maldives all the marine life is on at any particular time. Basically, dependant on the currents and the winds, the cruise director will select the dive sites.

On arrival: Guests arriving at Male Airport on the “check-in” day will be met by a representative of Emperor Maldives who will be wearing an Emperor Maldives T-Shirt and holding an Emperor Maldives sign. The meeting point is near the Help Desk.

For your flight times for this trip ideally you should aim to arrive around mid-afternoon on the day of departure as due to a same day turn around of the boat the guests from the trip before will be departing in the morning. The rest of the morning the boat will be being cleaned and prepared for your arrival around lunchtime. There are 3 complimentary transfer times from the airport to the boat on embarking day at 11:00am, 16:00pm and 22:30pm.

Guests taking the 11:00am transfer from the airport to the boat have to accept that the boat may not be fully cleaned or ready for boarding until 13:00pm. A light sandwich style snack will be provided for lunch. Any other transfers required on embarking day, other than the 3 stated above, can be arranged at a charge of 5 EUR per person, this charge will be added to your booking invoice.

If you would like to arrive the day before it is possible to stay on the airport atoll (HulhuMale - NOT Male), there are a mixture of hotels and guest houses to choose from so please check booking.com and search for Hulhumale. Your hotel / guest house will then deliver you back to the airport the following day (the day of departure) where you will be met by the boats representatives at airport arrivals and taken directly to the ship which is anchored offshore near the airport, you will journey over on the dhoni (the boats 15m dive boat) to join the main ship.

Please check with your hotel to see if there is any charge for this transfer as some offer it for free and some charge for this service. This is the only meeting point for the boat pick up, it is not possible to pick guests up at their respective hotels if you arrive early due to the distances involved between atolls and the time involved.

We will not be able to arrange direct transfers from the boat to other island resorts. The crew will transport you to the Airport to check bags into storage. If you are travelling later in the day you may consider a day room pass at a local hotel such as the Hulhule Island Hotel which is the closest to the airport. Normal day passes are for 12 hours and include use of the swimming pool, shower, towels, luggage storage etc, depending on which hotel you choose.

The day before there are only 2 dives ending around lunchtime so you may fly out in the late morning and still have the requisite no fly time required - Always refer to your dive computer for this but PADI recommends 18 hours.

BEST OF MALDIVES

This is the Best of the Maldives - and it delivers exactly that. This is where you dive the best and most famous dive sites of the Maldives in a week of wonderful liveaboard diving across Male and Ari atolls. Enjoy a dive holiday that gives you all you could wish for from the iconic sites of North Male, South Male and Ari Atoll. Awaiting you are channels, drifts and pinnacles where you have every chance of meeting mantas, whale sharks and mesmerising marine life of so many varieties. We don’t follow an exact itinerary; flexibility is the word so that no matter what time of the year you visit, this underwater world is yours (and ours) for the exploring.
This itinerary gives you a marine mix of big fish such as shark and manta dives as well as reef dives, reef fish, morays and the abundant macro life. Get up close at the cleaning stations without disturbing the locals!
One of the best known dive sites is Maaya Thila; this pinnacle is approximately 30m in diameter and falls away to reveal sharks and fish a plenty.
A night dive from sheltered moorings here is a must! And the boat will also aim to find whale sharks so you can get in the water and snorkel with them…as long as they stay around long enough!

  • Rasdhoo Atoll: Hammerhead Dive, Beautiful Reef with Pelagics
  • North Ari Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Maaya Thila Night Dive, Multiple Manta Cleaning Stations
  • South Ari Atoll: Whalesharks, Beautiful Pinnacles
  • South Male Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Eagle Rays, Other Pelagics, Beautiful Macro Wreck
  • Vaavu Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Eagle Rays, Other Pelagics, Traditional Maldivian Channel Diving
  • North Male Atoll: Beautiful Pinnacles

SHARKASTIC

In this period the clean ocean water flows in from the eastern side of the Maldives. That means currents running from Sumatra, Indonesia to the Maldives bring with them not just fantastic visibility up to 40m but also a variety of pelagic surprises coming to the reef for a quick feed.
The Channel dives of the eastern coast of the Maldives are the main order of the day. These Kandus, as they are known in the local language (Dhivehi), attract grey reef sharks, dog tooth tuna and eagle rays as standard but look out into the blue and you never know what surprises await. The outer walls and corners of the channels in Vaavu and Meemu have the added bonus of beautiful overhangs draping in the blues, yellows and pinks of the majestic soft coral.

  • South Ari Atoll: Whalesharks, Beautiful Pinnacles
  • South Male Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Eagle Rays, Other Pelagics, Beautiful Macro Wreck
  • Vaavu Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Eagle Rays, Other Pelagics, Traditional Maldivian Channel Diving
  • Meemu Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Eagle Rays, Other Pelagics, Traditional Maldivian Channel Diving

PELAGIC MAGIC

On this route we take you on a manta and whale shark journey to the North & South Ari Atolls having crossed over from Male. Exact dive sites will vary depending on diver experience levels, local conditions and where the best sightings have been.
Pelagic Magic gets you face to face with the famous whale sharks of Ari Atoll. As this itinerary devotes more time here, you are certain to get your whaleshark fix at Maamagili. Iconic dive follows iconic dive as you sail from Male through North Ari and then onto South Ari; your log book will fill with shark and manta sightings as well as outstanding reef dives. Then grab your snorkel and splash in to float only feet away from graceful whale sharks. Pelagics of all shapes and sizes await.
With around 17 dives, as well as opportunities to snorkel with the whale sharks, this is an action packed week. The pelagic sightings start right from the beginning. Manta Point (otherwise known as Lankan Finolhu) is a cleaning station with reliable manta sightings. Just settle down and watch the manta swoop in. Hafsa Thila and Maya Thila are yet more iconic dive site where sharks are plentiful. Look out for baby white tips under the large table corals. But it is at night that Maya Thila really comes alive. Reef sharks and marble morays hunt dinner out as morays slink between the coral blocks.
As you reach South Ari keep a look out for the whale sharks. Maamagili is the place to find whale sharks at this time as they follow the seasonal currents. Manta chase plankton trails too into the nearby lagoons. Between your pelagic encounters, the reef dives will not disappoint. Discover the lush corals and schooling fish at the likes of Reethi Thila and Kuda Rah.
This is a great itinerary for everyone. No matter what your experience level this is a Maldives itinerary you can enjoy. There can be some drift diving so some experience of diving in currents in advisable. Don’t forget to take your reef hook to make shark watching all the easier. As so many of the best whaleshark encounters are snorkelling, everyone can feel the thrill of seeing these graceful creatures in their natural environment. Pelagic Magic runs when the pelagics sightings are at their optimum in North and South Ari. Don’t delay - discover the biggest inhabitants of the Maldives for yourself.

  • North Ari Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Maaya Thila Night Dive, Multiple Manta Cleaning Stations
  • South Ari Atoll: Whalesharks, Beautiful Pinnacles

MANTA MADNESS

This itinerary runs at the time of a New Moon when the manta are most prolific between July and November, sailing from Male to the northern atolls of Baa (Hanifaru Bay) and back again.
As well as manta, you can get close to whale sharks, hammerheads and reef sharks. One of the big attractions is the promise of manta encounters and diving at this time of the year will hopefully fulfil that promise.
Thanks to the currents that sweep plankton into the shallow lagoons, manta and whale sharks follow in vast numbers to feed. Here you’ll see manta swim and loop at dive sites that have been chosen to hopefully give you sightings all week long.

  • Baa Atoll: Hanifaru Bay and other great dive sites
  • Rasdhoo Atoll: Hammerhead Dive, Beautiful Reef with Pelagics
  • North Ari Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Maaya Thila Night Dive, Multiple Manta Cleaning Stations
  • South Male Atoll: Grey Reef Sharks, Eagle Rays, Other Pelagics, Beautiful Macro Wreck.
  • North Male Atoll: Beautiful Pinnacles.

DEEP SOUTH AND SOUTHERN SHARKS

This itinerary suits experienced divers (100+ dives) with a strong focus on drift diving. All your diving is made from dhonis to give precise entry and exits points.
February to April is the time to sail to the southerly Maldives atolls and dive into the shark action in these out-of-the-way southern dive sites between Huvadhoo and Laamu. Spend a week away from the madding crowds and dive Foammulah and Huvadhoo on the lookout for the Indian Ocean’s larger residents; tiger sharks, silver tips, grey reef sharks and whale sharks.
From Male we take you to Huvadhoo by plane to join your liveaboard - or from Huvadhoo to Male depending on how you have chosen to dive it - and then it’s off on our adventure. Here you can expect to meet tiger and silver tip sharks around Foamulah. At Huvadhoo, one of the deepest lagoons in the Maldives, the currents are ideal for even more shark sightings including hopefully whale sharks and silkies, hammerheads, tiger and grey sharks spotted most of the time. There are swift channel dives with several kandus; Vilingilli, Nilandhoo, Mareehaa and Kondeey, as well as reef thila dives; Gazeera and Vaadhoo. The night dive on the Hyatt Reef is definitely one to be experienced.

  • Meemu Atoll: Beautiful channels with pelagic action, Sailfish, Grey Reef Sharks, Eagle Rays and beautiful soft coral. Manta cleaning station.
  • Thaa Atoll: Hammerhead Sharks, Whale Sharks, Dolphins, Traditional Maldivian Channel Diving.
  • Laamu Atoll: Beautiful fish filled channels with great shark encounters.
  • Huvadhoo Atoll: Whale Sharks, more sharks, fast channel dives in Vilingilli Kandu area

SOUTH CENTRAL ATOLLS

This itinerary is not for beginners and most dives will involve going to depth and diving with currents. All diving is made from dhonis to give precise entry and exit points. We recommend a minimum of 100 logged dives to join this trip. Please note: You may not visit each Atoll and your Cruise Director will decide which are best considering the conditions and diving options at the time.
January to March is the time to join us as this is when the current in the Kandus is largely incoming. There’s a good variety of diving from thrilling channel dives to more relaxed diving inside the atolls on Thilas or Giris.
The best thing? There are few, if no, boats as we visit atolls that have very few resorts and lots of uninhabited islands so liveaboard competition is low! The main manta activity is at Ari at this time of year but there’s a good manta cleaning station in Meemu Atoll.
Hammerheads are often found in Thaa as well as whale sharks who visit our boat at night attracted by the lights. When the currents are running well, the channel dives here are outstanding. Abundant with schooling snappers, jacks, barracuda, white tips and greys, grouper, Napoleon wrasse, turtles, eagle rays and more. Fancy a wreck dive? We can fix that for you at the Kuda Giri wreck, famous for its rare black corals and macro life complete with resident frog fish.

Final day

On the final evening Emperor will return to port to provision and refuel for the following charter.

Check in and out and departure On arrival: Guests arriving at Male Airport on the “check-in” day will be met by a representative of Emperor Maldives who will be wearing an Emperor Maldives T-Shirt and holding an Emperor Maldives sign. The meeting point is near the Help Desk.

We will not be able to arrange direct transfers from the boat to resorts. The crew will transport you to the Airport to check bags into storage. If you are travelling later in the day you may consider a day room pass at a local hotel such as the Hulhule Island Hotel which is the closest to the airport. The climate is warm year round and determined by the monsoons. The monsoons are mild and not as defined as in neighbouring countries. The northeast monsoon starts in January and goes through the end of April. In January and February the currents can be very strong but the big animal activity can be fantastic. The beginning of January brings clear water to most of the region which can be over 60m (200ft) visibility. Underwater visibility in the Maldives is determined by the tidal movements with incoming and outgoing tides. The monsoon patterns have a significant impact on the diving. From May to October, the southeast monsoon brings more big animal action and is the ideal time to go North to places like Baa Atoll.

The air temperature varies little with an annual average of 30C (90F) and minimum of 26C (80F), while the water temperature ranges from 26C (80F) to 30C (86F).

Diving is carried out from our purpose built “diving dhoni” that will not anchor but will follow the divers from the surface. This is the safest and most comfortable way to dive in the Maldives due to the wind and currents. Every diver will have their own Dive Station with their own basket for storing their diving gear, which will always remain on the diving dhoni. This system leaves the main boat free to handle accommodations, meals and social activities in a quieter atmosphere.

Most guests make up to 3 dives a day, so some sort of protection is needed. A 3mm wetsuit should be comfortable and adequate for most people.

There is a law in the Maldives that the depth limit is 98 feet/ 30 metres. The Divemaster requires proof of certification before the first dive. Proof of your Dive Insurance will also be required, as well as the signing of our Waiver of Indemnity form. Every effort is made to ensure you have a safe trip. However, unforeseen circumstances can and do happen. Therefore, dive accident insurance and travel insurance are compulsory. A reasonably priced DAN Dive Insurance may be purchased onboard.

ARI ATOLL - Some of the popular dive sites

KUDARAH THILA

Type of dive: Reef dive Description: One of the best dive sites for soft coral and fish life. The marine life here is so abundant, that the divers have named it ‘fish soup’. The thila is in a circular shape and can be covered in a single dive at different depths, if the current is not very strong.

MAAYA THILA

Type of dive: Reef dive / Night dive Description: The thila is about 80mters in diameter. The whole thila can be done at different depths in a single dive. There are manycaves and overhangs around the thila. The large rocks on the north eastern side have large black coral trees growing on them. The site is famous for the sharks and a great barracuda which reside here. The site can be dived at any time of the day, each with different activity going on the reef. The best chance to get close to these creatures is at night time, when they are hunting. You will see sharks, barracudas, rays and eels trying to grab a morsel.

BATHALA MAAGA KANTHILA

Type of dive: Drift dive Description: The northern tip of Magaa reef extends into Bathalaa Kandu, is home to a number of grey reef sharks and white-tip reef sharks. They can be seen patrolling along the reef looking for food.

MAALHOS THILA (BLUE CURVES)

Type of dive: Drift dive / Reef dive Description: The thila is known for the abundance of soft coral growth on the thila, particularly the blue/violet colored variety that grows on the ceiling of the caves and overhangs, thus the name ‘blue caves’. In addition a large variety of fish life can be observed here.

RASDHOO MADIVARU

Type of dive: Drift dive / Channel dive Description: The reef on the southern side of Rasdhoo drops vertically to the ocean depths. The site is home to a school of Scalloped Hammerhead sharks (sphyrna lewini). In the early hours of the morning they rise from the deep waters off the atoll into the shallower depths, accessible to divers.

SOUTH MALE ATOLL - some of the more popular dive sites

GURAIDHOO KANDU SOUTH

Type of dive: Drift dive / channel dive Description: Since the eastern side of the channel is Open Ocean, large predatory fish can regularly be spotted here. This site is famous for sightings of sharks, schools of eagle rays and the occasional Sail fish and Hammerheads. The best condition to do the dive is when the current is flowing into the Atoll. The dive begins on the outer reef following the current into the atoll. Most of the pelagic species can be observed on the eastern side, where the reef drops off into the deep ocean. At the end of the dive in the channel, along the reef you can find overhangs with plenty of soft coral growth and small fish.

KANDOOMA THILA

Type of dive: Drift dive / reef dive Description: Located in a channel, the reef is subject to strong currents at times. The ocean currents carry lot of nutrients to the reef, supporting an abundance of sea life. The site is well renowned for the soft coral growth, turtles, diverse fish life and invertebrates found on the reef. At the reef slope you may find sharks and eagle rays.

EMBUDU KANDU (EXPRESS)

Type of dive: Drift dive / channel dive. Description: Similar to Guraidhoo Kandu, but more sharks are likely to be spotted here. The currents can be very strong at times. The stronger the current however the better chance of seeing sharks. Under the guidance of an experienced dive guide, the dive can be managed done easily.

PADI Discover Scuba Diving

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving program introduces people to scuba diving in a highly supervised and relaxed manner. It dispels common misconceptions about scuba diving by letting individuals try it out and experience it for themselves. Under the guidance of a PADI professional, new divers learn basic safety concepts, how to put on equipment, swim around in a safe environment and discover a totally new world, the beautiful and peaceful underwater world.

On MV Carpe Diem the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program is conducted at an open water dive site to give you a real life experience of what Scuba Diving is all about. This experience might get you ‘hooked’ for live on diving and on exploring further the wonders of the underwater sea life.

After trying scuba diving, many will choose to pursue certification by enrolling in a PADI Open Water Diver course, for which the new divers will earn credit (they will have had the first Confined Water Dive done).
